The public conception of Arabic clothing for women is bland, plain and completely inhibiting. This is a stereotype. The actual clothing currently worn by many Muslim women is undergoing a massive change. It dates back to the late 1990s, but has gained impetus in many countries over the past decade. From abayas to jilbabs to swimwear, Arabic clothing for women has seen a massive shake-up. For some, this is a complete westernization and ignores the dictates of the Koran; for others, following fashion, makes perfect sense and does not break any rules. Perhaps, like in the case of most religious texts, it is often a case of interpretation.
The Koran on Clothing
The text of the Koran/Quran indicates the best clothing any individual – male or female could wear is righteousness. In 7:26, the verse specifically states, “But the best garment is the garment of righteousness.” This is applicable to both men and women – “the children of Adam.” Since righteousness is insufficient covering and not very practical, physical clothing must do. The Koran has a few opinions on what women should wear in this respect.
According to 24:30-31, the most important thing women can do is to maintain their chastity. Yet, interestingly enough, the same applies to men. Women, to accomplish this must be sure they “not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary.” This includes the covering of the chest/breast. Texts also also refer to the length of the outfit. It admonishes women to “Lengthen [their] garments” (33:59). The book does not refer to covering the hair, completely conceal the body from head-to-toe or exclude ornamentation.
In fact, certain descriptions of how they may dress in Paradise are indicative of what may be acceptable as Arabic clothing for women. Those who live in Eden are clothed in apparel of “green silk and velvet” (18:31). This is repeated in 22:23 where the righteous will wear garments of silk.
Fashion Trends and Arabic Clothing for Women
All scholars (Ulama) of the Koran agree upon one thing. Women (and men) must not only behave, but also dress modestly. Acting and dressing in this fashion will indicate they are faithful to their religion. A woman can accomplish this while following certain fashionable trends. She can wear clothing that reflects her personality. This may be plain. It may also be colorful. It may lack ornamentation or be replete with embellishment. Arabic Clothing and fashion for Women may include, or not, a hair covering.
Indeed, all manner of stylish clothing is possible. Arabic clothing for women can adopt any of the latest trends as long as she remains modest in her attire and behavior. After all, modesty and high fashion are not mutually exclusive.
