A dental implant is an artificial root, a kind of titanium or zirconium rod, which is placed in the alveolar bone to replace one or several missing teeth. The implantologist adapts the length, the diameter, and the shape of each implant to each clinical case thanks to effective radiological examinations. This allows each Cosmetic Dentistry to locate neighboring anatomical structures and avoid complications.
The installation
The installation of an implant requires each surgeon to undergo a very rigorous protocol. The instruments used will have to be properly sterilized to prevent postoperative infection. First, the dentist must access the bone, clearing the gum. To do this, he or she makes an incision, then takes that section of gum off to view the surgical field.
Today, 3D scanners reproduce the precise anatomy of the jawbones to allow for a much less invasive surgery in usual cases (‘flapless’ technique). To do this the implantologist will design “implant imaging guides”. The implantologist will pass several drills of increasing diameter to prepare a place in the bone for the implant.
The bone is drilled at a very low speed and under irrigation, which helps to avoid the bone from overheating, which could cause necrosis. Drilling proceeds gradually to a diameter slightly smaller than that of the intended implant. Only a reliable Cosmetic Dentistry in Wrigleyville should handle this procedure.
Implant specifics
An implant is between three and six millimeters in diameter, and between six and eighteen millimeters in length. The implant should be stable and penetrate the bone slightly. After implant placement, the osseointegration phase will take place.
An implant is totally fixed, that is to say, it is firmly placed in the bone. The loading of an implant is usually deferred to allow the osseointegration phase (several weeks to several months) to take place. If forces are exerted too early on the implant, it may become mobile; there will be a fibrous bond between the implant and the bone, which is not desired.
However, with new implants and under certain conditions, the implant can be implanted immediately with a temporary prosthesis. This “immediate loading” must scrupulously respect the primary stabilization of the implant by an external fixator which will be realized by the temporary bridge. Thereafter, a crown will be placed on the implant, which will behave like an artificial root.
