Ambulatory anesthesia is specified for ambulatory surgeries. In ambulatory anesthesia, specific short-time anesthesia drugs are used to reduce the surgery time so that the patient can immediately return home after pain management treatment.
Determining Patient?s Suitability
A reputed organization will always assess your suitability for ambulatory anesthesia. The ambulatory anesthesia provider, also called anesthesiologist, will call you for a visit and gather information about your general health, medicinal and herbal allergies, and previous surgical and anesthetic history. Sometimes, laboratory tests are also required for determining the suitability.
Types of Ambulatory Anesthesia
The anesthesiologist will recommend any one of the following ambulatory anesthesia types.
General Anesthesia ? Anesthesia mask or intravenous anesthesia is given to the patient so that he completely loses the senses of feeling, hearing, and speaking for a few hours.
Local Anesthesia ? Specific body parts are numbed by injecting anesthetic fluids and chemicals. In this type, all other body parts and senses are active. Local anesthesia is given for minor surgeries and it may be given without the help of another team member.
Regional Anesthesia ? It is quite similar to local anesthesia. The only difference is that it is given for more complicated surgeries. In regional anesthesia, a larger part is numbed than local anesthesia.
Monitored Anesthesia ? In this type, sedatives and pain medicines are injected in the intravenous lines for monitoring body parts. This type is usually not given for surgeries.
Things Patient Must Remember
As a general rule, the patient should refrain from eating, drinking, and specially smoking and drinking.
During the first 24 hours of the surgery, you must ask someone from family, relatives or friends to stay with you.
If you are already on some kind of medication, then discuss them with anesthesiologist. Take the medicines before surgery only if the doctor allows.
Loose fitted clothes are good to get ready for surgery. Never keep jewelry or other valuable items with you when leaving home.
At least 3 hours before the operation, ask your ambulatory anesthesia provider to review your medical history once again. Sometimes, pre-anesthesia medicines are required to give, depending on the medical condition of the patient.
During and After Surgery ? For Your Information
During the surgery, the team of ambulatory anesthesia providers will stay in the ambulance for monitoring your blood pressure, pulse rate, and other medical conditions. After the surgery, you will be closely monitored by a team of highly professional anesthesiologists. If needed, the ambulance will shift you to hospital. Otherwise, you will be allowed to leave for home after energizing yourself with fresh fruit juices or other soft drinks. Many ambulatory anesthesia service providers offer ambulance-to-home facility as well.
