Tile Underlayment for Walls

Drywall: If you are placing tiles on a wall in a dry area, you can simply apply the tiles directly onto either rimed or painted drywall. However, if the drywall is painted with glossy paint, you should lightly sand it so that the tile adhesive will stick to it. Make sure the walls are very clean and free of grease before you begin tiling.

However, tiling directly onto drywall is not recommended for wet areas like showers. If drywall is already installed around your shower or bathtub, you can apply a waterproofing membrane over the wall.
