Working in a radiology lab or in any facility where patient x-rays or x-ray technology is used requires the use of specialized protection for both patients as well as technicians.

The most effective form of protection is still the use of lead shields for radiology. These are not the same as the extremely heavy and bulky products used decades ago, but there are some differences between manufacturers and products that should be carefully considered.

Aprons

Perhaps the most common option in lead shields for radiology is the lead apron. There are different types and options of these lead aprons that are designed for use in various types of applications.

The thickness of the lead sheet within the apron will be a factor of the energy potential of the radiation. The higher the radiation levels, the thicker the lead and the heavier the apron.

Lead Sheets

To provide full barriers, either mobile or stationary, lead shields for radiology can be applied to walls or frames. These can be used for any type of testing facility and offer ease of movement for technicians and radiologists while still providing the level of protection required.

Lead Bricks

In some types of applications, lead shields for radiology can be more substantial. This is often found in specific types of radiology as well as in research and testing types of facilities.

There are different types of lead brick that can be used to provide the specific level of protection from radiation that is required. These can be built into the structures of the room, or they can be used to line a room if necessary.

Some styles of bricks are meant to remain easy to move and relocate, allowing for room configuration changes as necessary. Others may be placed permanently in the room to provide a secure lead shield to prevent radiation transmission.
