Stud Guns: Types and Techniques
Stud or arc stud welding involves the joining of a fastener swiftly and effectively to a substrate or base metal. The fastener may be threaded or unthreaded. The stud gun places the stud or fastener so that it touches the substrate or base metal. The weld arc ensures attachment occurs by melting the welding stud base and the surrounding area. Force ensures the metal remains in place until attachment occurs. This entire process occurs within the space of a few milliseconds.

There are also two primary techniques for using a stud welder gun. These are
1. Contact: As the term indicates, in contact stud welding, the welder loads the gun with the stud then positions it in contact with the current workpiece.
2. Gap: This name is also reflective of the gun’s actions. The welder positions it above the often aluminum workpiece creating a gap between the gun and it.
Although both techniques differ, the results are the same. However, some companies prefer gap to contact. The former has a faster weld time than the latter does.
