Depending on the style of home, shutters can be designed for the interior or the exterior of the windows. They are an accent to the style and décor of the home that can create a more intimate, cool, shaded and secluded look or they can be opened to give a welcoming look to any room.

Shutters are usually designed with horizontal slats that can be wider or narrower to create a distinctive look. Today’s modern custom shutters can have the appearance of traditional wood but may incorporate materials that are durable, resistant to fading and that will stand up to a lifetime of use and still look beautiful.

What to Consider

When selecting custom shutters one of the most important factors to consider will be the design. Larger slats create a more open look when not closed and are a more traditional look for a plantation style effect. California style shutters are similar to the traditional plantation shutters but tend to have slightly wider slats. They are typically white or light-colored rather than left as natural wood colors.

The Shaker style of interior shutters is more like the traditional exterior shutters. These are solid wood or man-made shutters with a two or four panel design. They are often hinged and fold in and out.

A unique look for a kitchen or breakfast nook area is the café style shutter. These are similar to the plantation or California style shutters, but they cover only the bottom half of the window. This adds to privacy while still providing ample natural light to the area.

With all the options in custom shutters, take your time and look at the various designs, features and materials. Shutters can be designed to fit any size and shape of windows and also for sidelights and transoms for doors.
