Tanning beds accomplish their task through the application of a lamp. Tanning bed lamps come in a variety of types. As a salon operator or employee, it is essential you understand the different kinds of tanning bed lamps. This will allow you the knowledge to make certain the right replacement are used when the lamp bulb ceases to function properly.

Tanning Lamp Basics

The majority of tanning lamps are florescent. With low-pressure florescent types dominating the field. These are comprised of several main components. There are many different types of lamps for tanning beds, but you should know whether these lamps are right for your beds and your clients. Among the most common kinds of tanning lamps are:

 * Low Pressure Lamps: The most predominant in the tanning industry today, this type of fluorescent lamp usually ranges in wattage from between 80 to 160 watts. This type of lamp is employed for large, small and medium sized tanning beds of all quality and styles.

 * High Pressure or High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps: These lamps are smaller than their low-pressure counterpart is. Their primary use also differs. Instead of being mainly applied for full-body tanning beds, they are more frequently used for facial tanning. Usually Mercury vapor lamps, they have a wattage output of between 400 and30,000 watts. To ensure the safety of those who use a high-pressure lamp, the owner/operator must make sure a filter glass (commonly known as “blue glass”) is in place. Any indication of cracking or other signs of damage needs to result in immediate replacement of the glass

 * Duo Lamps: some beds utilize both high and low pressure tanning bed lamps. In these instances, make sure all components are in proper working order and never replace one type of lamp with the other

 * Bronzing Lamps: Bronzing lamps are distinguished from the other types by their UVA and UVB strengths. The intent is to provide a darker tan at a slower rate

Lamps are available in almost any color. The hue does not influence the actual UV light strength. However, a particular shade of tanning lamp may be more appropriate or suitable for your salon than another would.
