Coffee, tea, blueberries, sports drinks, even spaghetti sauce stains your teeth. Your smile is your first impression, and if it?s marred by yellowing or chips, chances are it?s not making the statement you have in mind. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry has made tremendous strides over the last few decades, and in New York lumineers give your grin supernatural star power.

What Are Lumineers?

Lumineers are thin and translucent shells placed over your original teeth. Because they are only about 0.2 mm thick, the dentist does not have to grind your teeth down to the extreme he or she would have to if you were having veneers placed.

If taken care of, lumineers will keep your smile bright and beautiful for up to 20 years. These teeth coverings are highly durable, making them a wonderful option for anyone looking to cover up minor cosmetic issues. They are also removable in case you don?t like them once placed.

How Are Lumineers Capped?

For your set of New York lumineers, you will only need to go to your dentist two or three times. If you have dental phobia, this is likely good news. Even if you aren?t afraid of the drill, it?s still nice that the procedure won?t take up a tremendous amount of your time.

During your first visit, your dentist will make a mold of both your upper and lower teeth. He or she will also take photos and perhaps even x-rays if necessary. After your exam, the molded impressions, photos, and your dental records will be sent to a laboratory where your shells will be made.

Once the thin caps have arrived at your dentist?s office you will be called back for application. Don?t start to panic; the procedure is far less invasive than other major dental work. Your dentist will try your lumineers on for size to ensure that they fit tightly over your teeth. If all is well, the work begins.

While you relax, each tooth in your mouth will be etched to roughen the surface. After each etching, a lumineer will be bonded to the tooth to permanently cover your original stained or chipped enamel. Because the shells are slightly translucent, the result is a natural looking and much whiter smile.

Once all of your lumineers have been placed, your dentist will check your bite to ensure that it is natural and won?t damage your new teeth. After that, you will leave the office with glint in your eye, a skip to your step, and the most amazing smile you thought you could never have.
