With all the options to customize an AR15 highlighted on different blogs, forums and even in how-to articles online, it often seems like rails, handguards, optics and grips are the only customization options to consider.

One of the components of the AR15 that is rarely discussed but that can be relatively easy to change out is the charging handle. This is really a personal preference and there is no reason for most casual shooters to make the change. However, if you do a lot of shooting or are serious about improving your weapon’s performance, changing out this component can make a significant improvement.

Why Bother?

The purpose of the charging handle is to assist in chambering a round, often the first round, as well as to address a problem with a double feed. Additionally, the handle comes into play when there is an empty case or a round that simply won’t eject using the normal mechanism of the weapon.

The design of the standard handle is really a t-shaped top that requires the shooter to place one finger and thumb or two fingers and pull back. This is not a natural movement and usually requires repositioning the weapon to complete the action.

The Options

Different styles in various models and options in a charging handle allow for side-charging. These are typically designed for use with the left hand, allowing the shooter to quickly locate the handle and pull it back without having to reposition the weapon.

There are also handles designed to have a latch on both sides, allowing for use from either the right or left-hand side of the weapon. These are sometimes called ambidextrous designs or models. Some of these are designed for military use and allow the handle to be operated with a foot if there is an injury or a need for this type of use in specific situations.

While more expensive than a standard design, these are both a practical addition to an AR15 as well as a real conversation starter. Perhaps not a priority, customizing these components will make your weapon more user-friendly.
