When you’re taking a vacation or you need to go on a last-minute business trip, it can be difficult to find someone to take care of your dog. You may have friends or family members who live in rental properties that do not allow pets. However, you should be able to find a dog kennel to care for your furry friend but you will need to prepare him or her for the stay.

Update Vaccinations

To protect the other dogs in a boarding facility as well as your pet, you need to have his or her vaccinations updated. His or her rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and Bordetella shots all need to be current before dropping him or her off at a dog boarding provider. To ensure that the shots work to prevent your dog and others from getting sick, the shots should be updated about two weeks prior to his or her stay.

Tour Facilities

You should take the time to tour the facilities of any dog boarding service that you’re considering for your pet. The facility should look and smell clean, the dogs shouldn’t seem anxious or nervous, and there should be separate facilities for other different types of pets. Your dog should have ample opportunities to get outside and be exercised while at a kennel.

Take Dog Items

To help with separation anxiety when you leave him or her at the dog boarding facility, take some of your dog’s favorite toys and his or her bedding. A good kennel should allow you to bring in your pet’s items so that he or she can soothe himself or herself while away from you in the strange facility.

Before committing to a boarding facility, watch how the staff interacts with the animals. Do they seem engaged or bored with their duties? At Animal Ark Pet Resort, the staff treats every pet as their own while he or she is staying at their kennels. You can also follow them on Twitter.
