Oftentimes when bringing home a new pet, they seem to be anxious and afraid of many things. This can be disconcerting and hard to deal with for new pet owners. However, there are many ways to calm your pet down and get them used to their new home.

Interaction with Family Members

Your pet will be around you and your family constantly, so it’s important that they get used to you and begin to feel comfortable around you. Never force your pet to stay near you, or pick them up if they don’t want to be. But, be sure to spend as much time as you can in close quarters with the animal. Soon, they will become accustomed to your presence and look to you for comfort.

Pleasant Rewards

A new home can mean many unknown and unpleasant things for a pet, so it’s important to emphasize something they enjoy. Through observation, find out what your pet likes. Whether it’s a certain toy, food or treat- they will certainly find something. Once you know, you can use these things as pleasant rewards or a way to make your home seem more inviting to them.

Car Comfort

One very common fear that pets seem to have is car rides. If you are driving them to your home for the first time, this can start things off on a very bad note. Be sure to get your pet accustomed to the ride by letting them sit in the car for a few moments before you start driving. It’s a good idea to hold them tightly or keep them in an enclosure for car safety and to help them feel secure.

Medical Help

If your pet’s anxiety persists and becomes a serious problem, it’s a good idea to make a special appointment with a veterinarian in Chicago. Your vet can suggest medications for your pet to help calm them, or more serious methods to help them become comfortable with you and your home.
