In Maui, there is beautiful clear water, colorful sea life, and amazing diving. You can expect to see everything from puffer fish and sea turtles to eels or reef shark. It’s no surprise that many people head to the island to enjoy scuba diving in Maui. There are amazing shore dives, fantastic boat dives, and tons of experiences to be had. If you aren’t sure where to start, we can help.
St. Anthony Shipwreck
St. Anthony is a ship wreck that was sunk intentionally to become part of the existing artificial reef. It sits in 70 feet of water, and you can often see frog fish and turtles. It’s also a fantastic location to check out the many fish located in Maui. You may see everything from barracudas, sergeant majors, and butterflyfish. Most people go to this location on a boat dive, but a scooter dive is also a great experience.
Ahihi Cove
This area is a marine preserve, which means that you can see all sorts of amazing animals. There are no commercial operators for this location, so you need to be able to dive on your own to enjoy this location. Entry can be a bit difficult, but once you make it in, you’ll find it is well worth it. You might run into lined butterflyfish, parrotfish, blue striped snappers, and more. As a tip, if you plan to do your diving in Maui here, get there early in the morning for the best parking and access.
Ulua Beach
If you learned to dive in Maui, you might already know Ulua Beach. It has great facilities, including showers and bathrooms, and it has a simple entry for beginning divers. Some of the sea life you’ll encounter include rays, frog fish, eels, and plenty of turtles. This is one of the best locations for your first dive and can help you get acclimated to the Maui waters. This is a busy spot so getting there early is an excellent plan.
Mala Warf
The last destination we’ll talk about is Mala Warf. It consists of an old broken-down pier and schools of goatfish, along with white tip reef sharks and turtles. The depth only hits about 35 ft so you can appreciate a long dive at this location. Make sure to enter from the left of the pier, as the right side is reserved for boat traffic.
