If your vehicle’s windshield has a large crack in it or a spiderweb of cracks radiating out in all directions, it may be time to call an auto glass replacement service. These businesses specialize in replacing the windshield when it has become too damaged to be repaired. While replacing the entire windshield will be more costly than simply having it repaired, sometimes there is no other option. Here are a few different cases in which the windshield will need to be completely replaced.

It Has Large Cracks in it

If you only have a few small cracks on your windshield, those cracks can probably be repaired. However, if the cracks spread across more than half of the glass or if you have many small cracks radiating out from a chip in the glass, you’re going to need to contact a Dallas auto glass replacement shop. This type of major damage cannot be repaired because the glass has been weakened too much from the cracks.

The Cracks Are Deep

Small surface cracks and chips can often be repaired, but cracks that go deep into the glass, even if they’re small, may result in the need to replace the entire windshield. It can be very hard to tell how deep a crack is, which is why it can be surprising when an auto glass replacement technician tells you the crack cannot be repaired.

The Crack’s Location

When windshields are repaired, there may be a slight unevenness in the glass or a small amount of discoloration where the crack once was. If this is in front of the driver, it can cause some visibility issues, especially if multiple cracks have to be repaired. Cracks that are along the edge may also require auto glass replacement instead of repair. That’s because these cracks are close to where the windshield is attached to the frame, and cracks here can cause the glass to shift or even come loose.
