The corrective action process implemented with respect to improving an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system is the central factor in bringing about improvement in the system. Some companies miss the critical aspect of how to effectively implement corrective action and quality assurance protocols to their fullest extent. Other companies grasp the concept and apply the necessary protocols and steps to receive maximum benefit. At Class C Components, we are ISO 9001 certified and your premier source for industrial fasteners in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and beyond.

The root cause identification and corrective action process that is most effective involves investigating the failed process and determining where and how the process rule was violated. From there, corrective actions may be determined and pursued.

Finding the Root Cause

When a process fails, problems result. Some questions need to be asked in order to effectively solve a process problem. The ISO 9001:2015 corrective action process involves an investigation into the root cause.

Some of the questions that may be used during the investigative process that seeks the root cause of the process related issue include:

• Where is the process officially defined?

• Are the individuals performing the work able to demonstrate comprehensive understanding of this defined process?

• Do obstacles exist within the process that hinder individuals from following the defined process?

• Can results be measured that demonstrate the process is set up effectively to consistently meet the requirements?

Corrective Action

After finding the root cause of the problem, it is essential to take action to correct the process. The necessary corrective action will become clear based on which of the questions reveal the root cause:

• If a proper definition of the process is not available, then update or create the necessary documentation to define it.

• If individuals do not understand the process fully, then provide training that supplies that understanding.

• If obstacles are present in the process, identify and remove those obstacles.

• If the process measures demonstrate the process is not capable of meeting the requirements after checking off items 1-3 above, redesign the process and re-ask questions 1-3.

Companies that discover how to resolve problems effectively through the protocol mentioned above can have confidence that the investment they make in ISO 9001 certification serves as a key component of their future success. Care and commitment implementing the necessary corrective action and quality assurance protocols leads to business process improvement that benefits customers and improves the company’s bottom line
