Shoulder pain may be caused by sprains, strains, or even rotator cuff tears. Depending on the cause and your general state of health, your pain may range from mild to debilitating. Because of this, you’ll need to talk to a
coastal spine and pain physician, who can recommend the most effective treatment option for your individual situation.
Use a Sling
Immobilizing your shoulder by wearing a sling can help prevent further damage to injured structures. A sling also helps rest your shoulder, relieve pain, and protect your arm and shoulder from injuries. If you are wearing your sling for long periods of time, your coastal spine and pain physician may warn you that you may experience stiffness of your arm or shoulder. This can be alleviated by performing the exercises that your doctor recommends. Slings help relieve pain for all types of shoulder pain, and are often recommended after shoulder surgery.
Heat
While you may need to apply ice packs to your shoulder immediately after injuring it, heat may be a better option for pain relief later on. If you have sprained your shoulder, applying an ice pack to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb your pain, When the swelling subsides, however, placing a hot compress or heating pad over the affected area will help promote blood flow, reduce stiffness, enhance range of motion, and soothe sore muscles.
