Visiting a Veterinary Clinic can be stressful for a pet. The unfamiliar and sometimes unpleasant sounds and smells can frighten a pet. Since regular veterinary care is important to a pet’s well-being, it’s necessary to prepare your pet for visits so the visits will be more productive and less stressful for your pet.

It’s important for a veterinarian to have be able to examine and treat your pet. For this to happen, your pet must be receptive to procedures. If not, a veterinarian may have to sedate your pet. This poses risks such as anaphylactic shock and even death. Making your pet ready for medical care will help him relax and respond more favorably to treatments.

One of the best ways for your animal to have a pleasant visit is for him to get to know a veterinarian and his staff before a visit. Many clinics will allow you to stop by their facilities for a short visit. During this visit, let your pet walk around to get to know the area. Give him a treat if the clinic does not provide these. If the veterinarian is available, ask him to interact with your dog for a short time. Many veterinarians consider this an important part of their practice. The more familiar a pet is with his surroundings, the better his adjustment to treatments will be.

Make your pet’s visits fun but also make them routine. If your dog is on a regular schedule, don’t interrupt this routine unless it’s an emergency. Let your pet take one or two items with him such as a favorite toy and a security blanket. When you can, take your pet for a short ride before seeing the veterinarian.

This will help him adapt from being at home to being in another place. Be sure your pet is fed and rested before a visit to the veterinarian.
