Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States. This procedure can be performed on the lower or upper eyelids to treat common problems like loose skin, folds on the upper eyelids, bags under the eyes, and drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty has a high patient satisfaction rate because it doesn’t just boost confidence; it can also treat functional problems that impair your vision. Here are 3 things you should know if you’re considering eyelid surgery in Chicago.

#1. Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure
Blepharoplasty is not performed under general anesthesia unless you are undergoing additional cosmetic procedures at the same time like a facelift. As an outpatient procedure, your eyelid surgery will be performed under local anesthesia with or without local sedation. You will not need to spend the night in the hospital.

#2. It isn’t always cosmetic
For some people, sun damage and normal aging make the skin of the upper eyelids sag enough that it obstructs vision. If your vision is compromised by drooping skin, your insurance may cover blepharoplasty.

#3. Blepharoplasty recovery tends to be fast
Upper eyelid lifts are more common than lower lid lifts and swelling and bruising tends to be mild. Most people are able to drive the day after surgery. When bruising and swelling does occur, it tends to dissipate on its own after two or three days. The sutures will be removed after five days and the results will be fully visible. During the first day, you will need to ice your eyes to reduce swelling. You will also need to apply a topical ointment for a few days to speed healing.
