Patients coming into cardio testing labs, rehabilitation facilities or seeing their cardiologist may be requested to complete a stress test. For many patients, this is an intimidating type of test, so having equipment that is simple, safe and easy to use will be a critical factor.

Of course, the patients will only use the treadmill, which is a critical part of the stress test equipment. The actual stress test machine will be used by the technician, typically off to the side and away from the treadmill. Often the patient is very curious about just what is begin monitored and what the technician will be doing while they are working on the treadmill.

Explain the Test and the Results

The vast majority of patients will have experience on a treadmill, but don’t assume they will have used one correctly. Make sure to explain the test and also provide safety instructions to the patients.

Verify they understand that the test can be stopped at any time. Let them know that you have the ability to immediately stop the treadmill from the stress test machine. The machine is also programmed to increase incline and speed while monitoring the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and EKG.

What to Consider

Look for a stress test machine that is easy to use for your technician. Having intuitive controls and allowing for full control over the system makes it more comfortable for patients. It also provides for an immediate adjustment to the system, automatic transfer of patient data to electronic patient records and a printed and digital display.

Most of the monitors or machines will be very streamlined and look more like a small desktop computer on a trolley. These are not just space saving options, but they also are much less intimidating or threatening to patients.
