A telephone technician is an individual who undertakes telephone system repair along with installation and testing. Depending on the circumstances the technician may or may not be responsible for installation of the in-house wiring for the system.

Many telephone technicians find themselves spending the bulk of their time working on the installation, testing and telephone system repair in private residences. In most cases the technician has an assigned vehicle that he or she uses to travel to and from the clients premises. The vehicle is fully equipped with all the tools and spare parts that are necessary to perform the job.

A telephone technician finds that the job is a combination of physical and technical needs. From the physical point of view the technician has to climb ladders and do a great deal of bending and kneeling. Although in many areas all the cables are buried in underground conduits there are still many situations where the technician will have to climb poles to reach cables and connection boxes. From a technical point of view the technician must be familiar with all the aspects associated with voice, data, internet or combinations of the three, as well as computer-telephone integration and VoIP (voice over internet protocol).

Although residential services are in demand, that does not eliminate the technician from working in business environments. Although the physical aspects are the same the systems in an office are invariably far more complicated. The incoming calls to the company need to be routed to the proper individual and the technician is responsible for installing the system in such a way that this works well. Although an office receives many calls from the outside and makes many outside calls, there is a need for the system to accept inter-office calls, something that is rarely part of a residential installation. Although switchboards are not as popular as they once were, telephone system repair is still called upon to maintain them.

The technician does not have to be a college graduate but because of the complexity of modern telecommunications most technicians have received detailed training in electronics. New entrants to a telecom normally have to take tests to prove their knowledge of complete systems and to continue updating their knowledge and skills as new and more complex equipment is introduced to the market.
