We see the healing power of Jesus when we read about his encounter with the ten lepers. Yet do we see the true meaning behind this story? Free Online Bible Commentary can offer insight into many bible passages and stories. The story of the lepers teaches about love, but also about being grateful and humble before God.
When Jesus is approached by the lepers he does not turn away in fear like others. Instead he greets them and embraces them offering them his healing powers. God heals the lepers through Jesus allowing them to go and lead a life in health and happiness. Yet only one of the ten lepers returns to speak to Jesus and thank him for his gift.
We know that when someone loves us they do not offer us gifts in order to be thanked. Yet what message are we sending when we do not take time to thank them? We are taught from a young age to say thank you, yet how many of us take time to say thank you to God?
God loves us unconditionally, but he is also all powerful. An important aspect of Christianity is learning to be grateful but to also remain reverent. We have to be respectful of God’s power and of the ten lepers only one truly understood what had happened.
When Jesus heals the lepers it is not with the expectation that he will receive anything in return. In this case the single man who comes back to thank Jesus does so at his feet in reverence and fear. He has found Jesus, not just the fact he has been healed. This is the most important message. When we are thankful it should be for God’s awesome power and everlasting love. It should be with worship of his power and almighty love.
Everyday we must remember the power and strength of God. We must kneel down in his presence and show our respect and devotion. Being thankful for his love is part of our faith. We only have to fear God in the sense of what our lives would be like without his love and without our faith. This story teaches us the importance of being humble before God and to always remain grateful for his love.
